ISED is alive and kicking!

Last year the board decided to use 2009 to transform ISED into a network organization. And indeed, the board succeeded in convincing most deans of Graduate Schools of the need for and viability of the intended transformation. However, due to the dynamics within Graduate Schools, there was no opportunity for a well-regulated and concerted transformation effort.

Our consultations with administrators, senior staff, and PhD students generally confirmed that Graduate Schools do not provide a sufficiently specialized training program for PhD students. Moreover, PhD students who have completed a Research Master complain that many courses offered in Graduate Schools are similar to, or overlap considerably with, courses offered via the RM program. In addition, Graduate Schools do not or rarely organize contacts between PhDs from different Universities/Graduate Schools. It is this wish for specialized courses and exchange of ideas between PhDs from different Graduate Schools that led to the call for the continuation of an organization such as ISED.

The outcome of the board meeting during the 2009 ISED Research Day was that ISED will continue to support the organization of seminars and other meetings, allowing for interuniversity and interdisciplinary exchange of ideas between PhDs. Also ISED will continue to organize the yearly IRD. ISED will drop the routine of evaluating research output and research proposals, and will no longer function as an assessor of individual PhD training programs. The board also decided that in the coming year ISED will entice and support groups and individuals to address the concern that training programs in most Graduate Schools do not meet the wishes or requirements of PhDs and supervisors. ISED will support them by organizing a variety of disciplinary networks aiming at designing innovative, state of the art, specialized courses. These networks and the available means for support will be announced on the ISED-website.
